Who We Are

Equine Rescue of Aiken, (aka, Aiken Equine Rescue) was established in 2006 with almost 80 acres of land.  We have eight pastures, thirteen paddocks, office building and a maintenance barn.

Since its founding, Aiken Equine Rescue has become the largest horse rescue farms in the southeastern United States.   We have placed over  1,800 horses into adopted homes and rescued many horses, donkeys, and mules.  At any given time, between 40-60 horses reside at Aiken Equine Rescue.

Equine Rescue of Aiken is proud to be accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)*, meeting the highest standards in Thoroughbred aftercare, rehabilitation and rehoming.

Retired racehorses are incredibly versatile and athletic, with the potential to excel in a variety of disciplines include eventing, dressage, hunter/jumpers, trail riding and even barrel racing.  Our program under TAA provides a soft landing from the track, giving these talented athletes the time and training they need to adjust to a new career or enjoy a well-earned retirement.

Having a dedicated aftercare program is critical to ensuring the well-being of these horses beyond their racing careers.  With proper support, they can go on to thrive in new homes, proving time and again their heart, intelligence, and willingness to fulfill a purpose.  With the backing of the TAA and our dedicated supporters, we continue our mission of People Helping Horses, Horses Helping People, one Thoroughbred at a time.

Aiken Equine Rescue has a 2025 GuideStar’s Platinum rating - the highest distinction of information disclosure to the public regarding a nonprofit’s activities.  The Rescue ranks in the top 0.1% of charities nationally.

*The TAA is a nonprofit organizatio funded by contributions from the racing industry and plays a critical role in the welfare of retired racehorses.  The TAA accredits, inspects and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations like the Equine Rescue of Aiken.
